ASOM SAHITYA SABHA

Asom Sahitya Sabha is the largest non-political and national organisation of Assam which enjoys immense popularity among the people irrespective of caste, creed, religion and language. It is the premier literary organisation of Assam and considered as world's largest literary organisation.

ASS was founded in 1917. It's central office is located at Jorhat, Assam. It has five regional offices at Guwahati, Diphu, Dhuburi, Dibrugarh and Silchar. The organisation has nearly one thousand branches all over Assam, neighboring states and abroad. The branches and the district units have their own offices.

The main aim of ASS is to to make all round development of the Assamese language, literature and the multifarious but indigenous culture of the state. ASS pays importance on the publications of Dictionary, Grammar, Research works, monographs on languages, literature, culture, tribes and races etc., books on literary criticism, complete works of the great writers of Assam etc.; Publication of Assamese Encyclopedia (Bishwakosh); To enquire, collect and research on ancient literature of the state of Assam; To find out and publish the rare books; To recognize and award the outstanding writers, scholars and artists of the state; To provide financial help to the deserving writers who cannot afford to publish their books and literature for financial stringency; To promote music, art and sculpture of the state; To publish a journal of the Sabha on regular basis; To bring out leaflets, pamphlets etc. in order to publicize the Assamese language and literature; To establish Research Centre to develop Assamese language, literature and culture; To promote exchange plans and schemes between literature and culture; To do such work which helps in expanding development of Assamese language, literature and culture.
The first conference of ASS was held in December 1917 at Sibsagar. First President was Padmanath Gohain Baruah and Secretary was Sarat Chandra Goswami. 7th Special Annual Session is going on at Lido, South-East Assam. Sahitya Academi awardee, Padmashri, Rongbong Terang (from Diphu, Karbi Anglong i.e. my place) is the President.
