ALI-AI-LIGANG
Ali-Ai-Ligang is the chief festival of the Misings, a colourful tribe of Assam, India. 'Ali' means root/seed; 'Ai'/'yai' means fruit'; 'Ligang' means sowing/planting of roots, seeds. The first Wednesday of the month known as 'Ligang Lange' ('Fagun' in Assamese) and it is fixed for this festival to start with. Thus Ali-Ai-Ligang indicates the ceremonial beginning of sowing of paddy or the sowing season. Missing people of Assam celebrate the occasion by singing and dancing in the courtyard of every household in the village with traditional musical instruments. They wear colourful and attractive traditional dresses. The festival continues for five days with a grand community feast.
